Car of the Day: Toyota Supra Mark IV
Comments (9)

We’ve been hearing you, dedicated fans of Need for Speed. You told us loud and clear that the Toyota Supra was a car you wanted in the fastest racing game on Earth.

With the release of the SHIFT Team Racing Pack, the Supra Mark IV can be yours in SHIFT. Thought of as the last Japanese ‘exotic’ before the Nissan GT-R bowed in 2008, the Mark IV Supra blurs the line between beauty and brawn.

Powered by a 3-liter dual-cam inline-six featuring a twin-turbo setup, the Supra pumps out 320 horsepower, which at the time made it one of the most powerful Japanese production cars ever built. It runs 0-60 in less than five seconds, possibly even faster with the right tuning in SHIFT.

Speaking of tuning, the Supra has a massive following in this community, keeping the car alive years after its departure from showrooms, due in no small part to its being featured in street racing movie The Fast and the Furious.

Due to its rarity in North America, many people have taken to importing the Mark IV from Japan. Some examples from this era can still fetch up to $20,000 on the open market.

Its beauty was recognized by science and technology magazine Popular Mechanics, which awarded the Mark IV Supra with an Engineering and Design honor in 1994, the inaugural year of the Mark IV.

The Mark IV has been featured in eight Need for Speed games, including SHIFT, but its lineage goes all the way back to the very first game: Need for Speed.

I can’t help but get a little nostalgic when I see the Supra in SHIFT because I remember burning down the ‘Alpine’ track in Need for Speed in my black Mark IV so many years ago. How things have changed.

1998 was the final year the Supra was available in the United States (Toyota stopped sending Supras to Canada in 1997), as it disappeared across the Pacific due to emission concerns before eventually being scrapped by Toyota in 2003, but the fun lives on when you download the Team Racing Pack for SHIFT.
