Perfecting your Drift in SHIFT
Comments (18)

A special treat today for regular readers of needforspeed.com, as our dedicated and hardworking QA team has their top five pointers about mastering Drift mode in Need for Speed SHIFT.

1. It's important to choose a car that suits your driving style. Try out a few cars and pick one that suits your style best.

2. Successful drifting involves counter-steering. Once you begin to lose rear tire grip, you need to turn the wheel in the opposite direction you're moving in to continue the drift.

3. Figure out how to achieve perfect clipping points. Drift as close to the corners of the track as you can. Getting close is good, bumping them is better. When you combine these with the 2x multiplier, you can get plenty of extra points - it's very important to keep the 2x multiplier up. If you fail a corner, don't get discouraged, attempt the next corner quickly to maintain your multiplier.

4. Do not drive 'full throttle'. Learn how to properly 'feather' the throttle during your drift, keeping the rear end at a perfect point to make sure you maintain grip loss. When you feel your car beginning to spin out, release the throttle and balance yourself back into position.

5. You need to know the courses you're drifting on. Getting used to entry speeds for each corner is important, it will allow you to swing straight through and keep up your drift. Also, follow the red/white arrows, following the angles they suggest. The arrows will show you the best angles to enter turns.

The list was compiled by Matt Johnson, Kris Katerenchuk, Stanislav Frolov and Michael Quan.

Drifting is so much easier with a logitech, Force feedback wheel, just so that you can let the wheel counter by releasing the wheel, letting it turn by itself and grab it at its sweet spot... not I love Drifting, the car that suits me best is the rx7 , Tuned to my benefits, Upgraded parts but engine and some parts were only upgraded up to tier 2, plus no nitrous, Nitrous I dont think should've been placed in this game.... the angle, and feather the throttle easily, and the angle is easier to hold

I am so frustrated with Shift's drifting. Using a keyboard, I can't complete a turn, let alone drift it. Tap a key (any) and you are instantly 90 degrees sideways. At least the Underground series' drifting was FUN. This is just garbage. Especially coming from the makers of GTR2, the holy grail of sim racing. This is just a repackaged arcade racer... it's Underground only instead of ending with a Skyline you can rice up a Veyron with ugly body kits and vinyls and eat up ads for BBS, Konig, etc. I'm not even sure how that marketing vehicle works; I just know I run out to buy 19" carbon black magnesium alloys for my '89 Tempo every time I play NFS. Only unlike Underground, where drifting was the best part of the game, it is nigh-impossible with a keyboard. /rant P.S. Gran Turismo 5 will destroy Shift and I want my money back.

I Works modded a Corolla and it worked well.. The grip is awesome and doesn't spin out that easily... I highly recommend it for first timers.

I'll try this later on. So far my drifting has been terrible, but I need to practice it more. Getting the proper speed and keeping the throttle down has been my problem so far. Also, I've heard that practicing the drift on Quick Race on the oval or figure 8 track with various cars will help a lot. Does anyone have any tips for a good way to get the 'Spin Out Opponent' technique?

Have you guys tryed to drift with

a G25 wheel ?

Well you cant because there is no way of remapping the button layout for handbrake

Have you guys tried drifting with keyboard?

I think it's way too hard! I mean feather the acceleration and such is next to impossible.
