A personal look at the world of Need for Speed from the team behind the games
NFS WORLD ONLINE: ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE - EPISODE 1
Comments ( 38 )

The lid has come off. The cover is blown. Last week the first few images were released of Need for Speed's next big project, World Online.

As some of you are aware, NFS is getting ready to hit the masses in an online only extravaganza that combines the previously visited cities of Rockport and Palmont from NFS: Most Wanted and NFS: Carbon. Together, that makes for one epic playground. That being said, I know there are rumors floating around as to what this game will consist of. Browsing the forums in places like NFSUnlimited.net, NFSCars.net or even our very own needforspeed.com forums, I've seen a lot of activity over what little information has been released so far. It seems our fans would love to see even more of our classic environments, like the Carbon Canyons and Bayview from Underground 2. I've seen some great maps here on the needforspeed.com boards that show how some of our fans envision all the cities flowing together. I love to see such passion! Now I know some fans aren't happy with how the two cities are currently connected so I thought I'd give a little insight into how the environment team is pulling this all together.

Before shots are from a build in February. Still the original assets and textures from Most Wanted and Carbon. After shots demonstrate some of the visual upgrades the environment team has been working on. These screens are untouched and there are still rendering glitches and bugs to fix.

The environment team for this project consists of roughly five artists, each of whom are experienced NFSers who are passionate about what they do. We've been spending the past several months revisiting all of Rockport and Palmont and improving upon the scenery. To live up to today's PCs, we need to do quite a bit of work in order to freshen up cities from 4 or 5 years ago. In some cases, it's not just a fresh coat of paint but an entire renovation! Will it look the same as you remember it? Sometimes. Sometimes it won't. Sometimes you won't even notice the upgrades, but they're there. We're taking creative license to go back and do things differently if we see fit. All in the name of a richer, immersive experience that looks better then you can remember it.

Massive overhaul. The old museum felt like it belonged in an N64 title.

To make a compelling online playground, we brought the two cities close together. Think of it as New York and New Jersey. I know there's been some debate about that. Some wish we had spread them out and sprinkled all the Carbon Canyon tracks in between. Truth be told, if we did that, we'd have to force the user to experience a load time at some point between the two cities. What we're trying to accomplish is to create as big of a drivable playground as possible within our current technical limitations. Look at games like World of Warcraft. Their gameplay areas are small in comparison with loads between areas. It might bother purists who don't think the cities belong so close together, but in actual fact, logic was thrown out the window a long time ago. Palmont was always designed to be on the west coast like L.A and Rockport was always designed to be in the east like New York and New England. They were never neighboring cities. Did we drop suggestions they were? Perhaps. As artists we always like to give "shout outs" to past games to tie them together. Whether it's a billboard with a city's name, or some audio clip that mentions a prime location from the past, it's our way of giving continuity (anyone ever notice how far back the Diggy's Donuts franchise goes?). However, not until World Online did we have to think of how we were going to physically tie everything together. So if you were ever wondering about some of those fake bridges and roads and where they went to, don't. It'll only drive you crazy. We don't even know where they go to...yet.

Adding much needed energy to the amusement park in Camden!

Which leads me to one other comment I've seen a few times on the boards. Bayview. Currently, we have no plans to include Bayview in World Online. One thing we learned from Palmont, is that when the sun comes up on a city that was only seen at night, there are LOTS of things to fix. The amount of upgrading that would be required to bring Bayview up to today's standards is a daunting task. Bayview was built primarily for the PS2 while Rockport was our first, true next gen city. So porting over Bayview would consume a lot of time and prevent us from getting to exciting, new content. We have stories to tell and places to invent. As we've been layering love onto Rockport and Palmont we've been buzzing with ideas on how to add to their richness. And how to expand. That's not to say Bayview is out of the question, it's just not in the cards right now.

The diner never looked so good!

And finally, the World Online team recently completed our first Closed Beta in Taiwan. We were all excited to see some of the reactions on what was just a slice of the game. It was great to see the community getting together and having so much fun. Here are some group photos! We're all looking forward to seeing the community evolve when the full game is released. And if anyone saw the YouTube videos, the NOS effect hasn't even been worked on yet so relax! . Just had to throw that in there.

I can't believe that you have already came up with this idea!!! Congratulations!!! I haven't looked at the forums about this, but it went through my mind, 'what if the EA makes mmo racing game?' . Or better yet, 'what if that game has car mods like

Underground 2?' That would truly be awesome, because there are many Underground 2 fans out there who would like to see that happen.

So, in conclusion, I would like to say: 'You MUST make this game that has car mods like Underground 2!!! To have all of that freedom of making unique car, that couldn't be done by everyone. And it has to have the DYNO tunning like one in the Underground 2!!! With that every one could make car good and fast enough for their own specifications. With that implanted, it would be the ULTIMATE game to play.

Hardly anyone could come even close in making a game like that!

PLEASE DO THIS, AND I'LL BE PLAYING THAT GAME FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE!!!!!! Just like I do Underground 2!!! :-)

Why not to leave the final road from MW, followed by that tunnel you made for the connection between the cities? It shouldn't take much computing resources...

I wish that US/Canada tracks from nfs HS will be added in future as an expansion, in a form of old tracks, extended to small villages, connected to those two cities.

I think you should focus and this 2 cities and the game perfect!

About Bayview after you release the game after some time you can make it as an expansion that has bayview and new cars part and other stuff it be a lot better. this way we can have a perfect online racing game and after some time we can a classic city of the nfs series which me favourite by the way .

@ Toyota Supra 15 Why don't you start using google rather than asking silly questions? Stop bothering the developers. They'll release info when its time.

It's just breathtaking and amazing!

Most Wanted was always my favorite NFS i played it for years, i knew everything about it. I modded it also by myself and the connection to carbon through the story made me loving carbon in the same way!
I was a bit sad to see how the old bridge was turned into a tunnel, at least this connection could have been left for the players like me, who has that great memories of the games.
Well i noticed this sentence in the article: "We have stories to tell and places to invent." So are we allowed to expect a single player story mode in the game, like we had in MW and Carbon ?

LOVE IT!

PLEASE tell me there will be a Mac version in the works!

We're people too, lol!

The game looks better on full screen actually...the screenshots don't reveal all of its beauty.

@KsbjA There is a small chance of seeing a detailed "visual damage on/off" if the car models are from NFS Pro Street, which I doubt because I'm not sure if they can be integrated.

The before shots aren't from Most Wanted or Carbon. They're from our World Online build back in February. It's the same content as what we shipped with before we started making our improvements. Yes, the water is missing as the ocean shader was broken at that time, but I assure you that everything else is set to high. Textures are at their highest resolution and the buildings and props are all set to their highest level of detail. Trust me, the girl on the rocket looked like that in Most Wanted. Even on high. That's why we wanted to change it so bad. Just wasn't sexy. Sorry if you think we're trying to pull a fast one, but we're not. I didn't even touch up the after shots in Photoshop.

This is ridiculous. First of all you CAN NOT compare a low detail setting from MW and a WO high detail level from the "beta". You guys setted MW in low detail and even removed some textures (yes, set the level of detail to low and take a look at the water, it is NOT black as the pic above, it still has the texture without the processing) and also the world detail is setted to low in the chick riding the rocket.

Embarrising to be honest, but you guys first do something beliavable (set MW to HIGH detail and then compare with the WO engine)

@Kaizeras933 - I just hate indestructible concrete cars. They're cars, not toys! Crashing into a truck at 200 mph and getting no damage, apart from a bit of paint scratched off the front bumper, is LAME! I want to race my car and rivals' cars to bits! I'd adore it if the devs put damage as a client-side option. If you don't want to see any damaged cars, switch it off. If I want to see it, I enable it. A perfect compromise, isn't it?

Having no damage OPTION would mess up this game for me. We all players long for an NFS game that everybody likes. Can't you just simply carry over Undercover's or ProStreet's damage system to this game? I'm certainly no expert, but I remember reading that Undercover's damage system was copied from ProStreet and somehow 'improved'. Heck, leave the improving alone this time, but is a basic damage model really too much to ask?

Lol guess I'll stop begging, I'm sure I annoy you too much already. :-P Good luck then!

P.S. Don't forget about the damage!

I really hope that the online and/or ongoing playability of this is good. After getting 100% on/beating Hot Pursuit 2, Underground, Underground 2, Most Wanted, Carbon, ProStreet and Undercover there's no playability left for me, so now they're all sitting unused in my DVD/Game Tower, which is a bit of a pity :( I really hope that they do make a PS3 and/or an XBOX360 port of World Online as I generally don't have the time to use a Gaming Computer with any regularity, which is why I sold off my outdated one not too long ago. I also hope that EA implement longer races beyond the typical 5-10mile threshold; I remember a few tollbooth races in Most Wanted were around the 20 mile mark, which were awesome to do.However, one of the best "street" races that I have had the pleasure of doing was a 103 mile race in Test Drive Unlimited, where I was doing anything upwards of 240+mph on some sections and as slow as 60mph in others, I adored it. I'd love to have more races like that in World Online, just long "endurance" races that test the skill and patience of a player and his chosen vehicle.
