While on yet another dive into the jet-stream Jesse Abney emailed me earlier today to remind me of a story he wrote a few weeks ago to detail the controller settings for SHIFT suggestion release week was a perfect time to republish the story so without further ado I bring you Jesse Abney: "SHIFT has introduced one of Need for Speed's more complex controller options. This is intended to provide more configurability to the simulation players, deepening the level of control they have with the game's controller & wheel intelligence.
A quick definition is provided below to help determine what's good to touch or best-left unaltered. Don't forget to use the DEFAULTS option if settings get tweaked too far.
Steering Deadzone - The smaller the value the smaller the deadzone. For steering wheels it is recommended to have this value at 0%. | NOTE: These next few deadzone settings for a gamepad are best-left unaltered.
Accelerator Deadzone - The basic description for all the deadzones are the same. For the initial range of motion no input is reported, and then starts when the end of he deadzone has been reached. On top of these additionl recommendations can be added.
Brake Deadzone - As above - For the initial range of motion no input is reported, and then starts when the end of he deadzone has been reached. On top of these additionl recommendations can be added.
Steering Sensitivity - This setting adjusts how sensitive the steering across the input span. With 50% sensitivity it is equally as sensitive at the beginning of the range as at the end of the range. This can make the steering feel twitchy on a game pad, thus it is recommended to have a lower sensitivy setting which makes the steering a bit less sensitive for small inputs. For a steering wheel it is recommended to have this setting at 50%.
Acceleration Sensitivity - Same as above, a value lower than 50% means the input is less sensitive in the beginning of the input span.
Braking Sensitivity - As defined above. If the default setting is not responsive enough (may well become car & performance specific), it's recommended to make slight adjustments & test.
Speed Steering Sensitivity - This setting reduces the sensitivity of steering at speed. A high value applies maximum effect to make the car stable to drive down straights with a gamepad. Lowering the value will make the car feel sensitive and twitchy at higher speeds. For a multiturn steering wheel it is recommended to set this value to 0%, for other wheels a value around 50% is recommended.
Inverse Shifting - Reverses the default controller shift buttons.
Camera Y Axis - Inverts the R-stick camera movement in game.
Wheel Lock - This determines how much of the available turn to turn lock to use for the steering wheel. On consoles this is set in degrees measured from lock to lock. On PC it is set as a percentage of the steerings wheels available lock. This can be fine tuned to suit the players preference, with less lock giving more sensitive steering, with too much lock the car will feel unresponsive.
FF Strength - Determines the strength of the force feedback effects, 0 means effects are muted, 10 gives the strongest effects.

@The authors: regarding the comment about re-setting the controls using "default" - maybe you should mention that this will obliterate EVERYTHING you've set up. Even if you only choose "defaults" on the "Adjust Controls" screen, which I did, thinking that it would reset my sensitivities, etc. only, it actually reset all my custom controls on the "Controls" screen, as well. Bummer!
@BB_Ford_472 - yeah, well, don't forget: DLC (car packs) and Steering Wheel controllers are both considered to be purchases that will only be made by the extremely dedicated player. Difference is, one pile of money goes to EA, the other goes to Logitech. Guess which pile of money EA cares about more.

I bought a Geforce 25 wheel to use with Shift. I tried it twice and was so ticked it sits in the closet. With the quality and fun of the rest of the game i can't believe it would be that hard to figure out the feedback for the steering. Maybe someone should go drive a real car and feel how much force you feel when the steering tries to center. When you slide the steering wheel always tries to self correct and it's totally backwards in the game. if you let go of the steering wheel you slam into the wall. the best result I got was wrapping a sock around the Geforce to "jam" the wheel and give it more weight. I'm sure it take a long time to develope the two car packs released. I'd happily do away with exotic cars for a wheel that works. Someone is really dropping the ball as this is such an important part of a racing game. Steering functionality should be #1 priority. you don't drive real cars with a game pad.

I see that NFS Shift doesn't do justice to the GT wheel from Logitech, or so it seems, but what about the G27 Racing Wheel? I am very interested in acquiring a wheel as I can not get into racing using the joystick.
Thanks,

This game has no support for Logitech gampads. Why? Apx 72% percent of games use gampads. Is this thing realy even on playsation?

I agree with most the comments the steering is very light with the G25 and it would nice to be able to configure the buttons I hope there is a fix for the light steering because this is spoiling a great game I suggest someone from EA get a G25 and a copy of gran turismo 5 prologue or f1 championship edition that’s how a sim racing game should handle if you can improve the handling with the G25 this will be the best game ever

This is nice... but when will we be able to map our own buttons so I can look left or right while using my steering wheel... mapping the look left/right option on an analog stick was not very smart... No I never know exactly where another car is...
